Emory Oxford College Pierce Hall

Mechanical design and construction phase services for complete interior demolition and renovation of a 28,900 sq. ft. classroom building originally built in 1962.

The renovated building serves the humanities, history/social sciences, and mathematics curriculums and includes classrooms, art studios, study spaces, offices, and two large conference rooms. The building is expected to achieve a Silver rating under LEED-NC v2009.

  • Detailed conceptual energy modeling and life cycle cost analysis of multiple HVAC system types and enhanced envelope options was performed during schematic design phase to allow Owner to select an optimized combination of technologies after comparing respective energy savings, first costs and returns on investment.
  • Mechanical system design and specification assisted in optimizing building’s energy performance 22.5% over its pre-renovation condition.
  • Two new ultra high efficiency, low sound air cooled chillers were sized to serve renovated building plus three adjacent buildings.
  • Interior HVAC equipment was located in the basement, ceiling plenums, or attic space to minimize impact to program space and to maximize ceiling heights.
  • Demand control ventilation using carbon dioxide sensors was used to minimize outside air load on heating and cooling systems.
  • Low flow plumbing fixtures were utilized to reduce water consumption 39% over a code minimum building, thereby saving an estimated 40,000 gallons of water annually.
  • New digital building automation system controls HVAC systems and provides continual diagnostic feedback to the campus facilities office.
